Electrolysis Flashcards
what is electrolysis? What does it involve?
breaking down of a substance using electricity. An electric current is passed thro electrolyte causing it to decompose.
oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction(gain of electrons)
what is an electrolyte? What creates a flow of charge through the electrolyte?
a molten or dissolved ionic compound
The + ions(cations)move towards cathode(negative electrode) and r reduced
- ions(anions)move towards anode(+electrode) and r oxidised
as ions do this they form uncharged substances and r discharged.
Suggest one way to set up an electrochemical cell
using a solution?
get 2 inert electrodes.
clean em with emery paper(or sandpaper)
be careful not touch surface of electrode (transfer grease)
place in beaker filled with electrolyte.
connect electrodes to power supply using crocodile clips, wires.Turn on power supply, current flow
Describe how to set up an electrochemical cell using molten substance?
put solid ionic susbs.. into crucible
heat on bunsen burner until molten(do in fume cupboard)
dip 2 inert electrodes into electrolyte
connect electrodes to power supply using wires, crocodile clips ,current flow thro em turn power on
