Ionic bonding Flashcards
what is it?
How it happens?
transfer of electrons between
metal/non metal atoms form cations/anions
metal loses electron +non metal gain electron -
oppositely charged ions strongly attracted to each other by electrostatic forces
When drawing diagrams to show ionic compounds what do we use ?
dots and crosses with arrows
Ionic compound properties
Structure
Forces of attraction?
lattice
regular arrangement of ions
held together by electrostatic forces(oppositely charged ions)
conduct electricity only when dissolved in water
high melting points
Explain why ionic compounds have high melting points
and only conduct electricity when in dissolved in water or in liquid form
high melting points-have strong, inter molecular electrostatic forces a lot of energy required to overcome this.
solution-electrons free to move and carry their own charge = become a sea of delocalised electrons
in solid state ions balance each other out and are neutral
