Acid rain and climate change Flashcards
Explain the difference between normal rain and Acid rain
lower pH
Name an impurity that hydrocarbons contain and state the name of it oxidised
sulfur and sulfur dioxide
What is acid rain and how is it formed?
rainwater naturally acidic bc it contains dissolved co2 and other acidic gases normally in air.
Acid rain is more acidic than normal rainwater bc it has sulfur dioxide dissolved in it.
Name 3 things that are damegd
rivers lakes and soils more acidic harms organisms living in them
trees damaged
speeds up weathering of buildings and statues
limestone erosion equation
calcium carbonate+sulfuric acid —->carbon dioxide+water+salt
Carbonates react with acid to produce co2, water and salt
How do we reduce this problem
removing sulfur from petrol diesel and fuel oil
and acidic gases from power station emissions
