Rome’s Site
built along the Tiber river put it in a distinct strategic advantage for trading expanding and defending
Ligurians
composed of different subgroups of people who lived in the northwestern part of Italy, in the areas of Genoa, Savona and Albegna they became skilled sailors and merchants
Etruscans
they lived to the west and south from the Ligurians, spoke a non-Indo-European language and developed a rich and powerful urban culture thanks to their fertile soil and other raw/mineral resources .
Gauls
located in the central part of the po valey, the gauls spread into France, the British isles and Italy spreading their language that made and influence on Italian dialects
Latins
Located in central Italy south of the Tiber, the plains in the area were ideal for herding and cultivating grain, in addition they took advantage of using the large supply of wood in the area, their specific roman dialect would become the one of the most important languages in the world.
Umbro-Sabellians
Located in the central appennines, maily consisted of pastoralists and peasant farmers which were in regular conflict with other wealthier and more urbanized people (especially with Latium and Campania) due to the need for more land caused by their large population.
Oscans and lapygians
the oscans dwelt in luciana around campania and were descendants of largly non-Indo-European-Speaking people. They evolved into close cultural and commercial contacnt with mycenaen and post-mycenaen greece.
Piceni
They inhabited the mid-adriatic coast north and south of Ancona between the Aesis and Pescara rivers. They had a long tradition of stockraising supplemented with hunting and fishing. Many weapons were found near early graves indicating a warlike nature. Aswell as becoming importatn people to Rome itself.
Greeks
Located all aroudn the coast of southern Italy from the bay of naplles to Tarentum. Their established colonies were prosperous trading centers aswell as giving them a large economic influence on the people of Rome.
Inhumation
elaborately decorated and furnished rock-cut chamber tombs used by the Etruscans.
Naples
Most important trading port in all of Roman history as well as being one of the most populous cities.
The First Punic War
The romans took control over Sicily in 264 BC.
