Q

When driving on a roundabout, where do you want to avoid looking at to stay in your lane?

A

Avoid looking at the central reservation kerb or the traffic next to your lane. Wherever you look, you will have a tendency to drive in that direction which is why you should look at the centre of your lane to stay in it.

Q

When you do an emergency stop, do you check the centre mirror?

A

No, in the test the examiner will check behind to make sure it is safe. Even in a real life situation, you don’t check the centre mirror as your priority should be not hitting the pedestrian.

Q

How to perform an emergency stop and what do you do to prevent skidding?

A
  1. Keep the wheel straight
  2. Rivet your foot from the accelerator to the break as quickly as possible.
  3. Once the car has stopped, put gear into park and put hand break up.
. When your foot is off the accelerator, do not hammer the pedal by also lifting your foot in the air and then pushing the break with full force. So make sure you keep your heels on the floor when moving from right (accelerator) to left (Break) and not your knees by moving up from accelerator to down towards the left (break).

Q

How do you do a Pull Up On The Right and Reverse manoeuvre?

A
  1. Once chosen a good place to stop
  2. Use MSM routine to safely park on the right side of the road. Move to the right in time for there to be time for the car to travel forward a little and straighten up fairly close to the kerb.
  3. Reverse gear
  4. Check blind spots and mirrors
  5. Reverse very slowly 2 car lengths and keep checking blind spots and mirrors especially right side mirror to make sure you are still parallel to the kerb while doing this.
  6. Stop (usually the instructor will tell you when to stop)
  7. Starting from right to left, check blind spots and mirrors
  8. Indicate left
  9. Wait for any oncoming traffic and then when it is safe, drive back to the left lane.

16
Q

What is a closed mini roundabout?

A

A mini roundabout is where you must approach with caution as the roads are blocked and thus impairs your ability to judge how far any oncoming traffic are.

17
Q

What is an open mini roundabout?

A

An open mini roundabout is where you must approach slowly but avoid coming to a stop unless there is oncoming priority on the roundabout as the roads are visible and thus improves your ability to judge how far any oncoming traffic are.

18
Q

What defines a mini roundabout from a roundabout?

A

Mini roundabouts are not characterised by their size but in actuality, their lack of a central reservation as they usually only have road markings in the middle.

19
Q

You are parked on the right side of the road. What is different about when you do the start manoeuvre to move off back to the left lane?

A
  1. You check your blind spots and mirrors from right to left.
  2. Indicate left
  3. When moving off, make sure you swiftly drive back into the left lane.
20
Q

You are waiting at a traffic light to turn left. What should you do before turning?

A

Check centre and left mirror

21
Q

How to maintain speed?

A
  1. Make sure your heel is always on the floor
  2. Observe Light Post Pace
  3. Observe Lane Line Pace
  4. Observe speedometer check routine
  5. Don’t focus on other cars
  6. Opt to adjust seat back enough so that you can feel for acceleration/deceleration
  7. Hold the pedal in the same spot/position
22
Q

What is the Light Post Pace rule?

A

When driving at any speed, you should be aware of how fast you are going by paying some attention to how quickly you are passing by the light posts. To make sure you are maintaining a consistent speed, you want to develop a pattern/beat to how quickly you are passing each light post.

23
Q

What is the Lane Line Pace rule?

A

When driving at any speed, you should be aware of how fast you are going by paying some attention to how quickly you are passing by the lane lines on the road. To make sure you are maintaining a consistent speed, you want to develop a pattern/beat to how quickly you are passing each lane line.

24
Q

What is the speedometer check routine?

A

Especially when driving down a longer road where you don’t plan to make turns within the next minute, you must make sure you are maintaining a safe and consistent speed. So that you are checking your speedometer often enough, it is good to get into the habit of:
1. Check left side mirror and eyes on road for 15 seconds
2. Check centre mirror and eyes on road for 15 second
3. Check right side mirror and eyes on road for 15 seconds
4. Check speedometer and eyes on road for 15 seconds
5. Repeat.

25
Q

When should Tires On Tarmac be observed?

A

. Distance behind another vehicle when you come to a stop in traffic.
. Ideal distance behind another vehicle when you finish parallel parking

26
Q

You want to turn right at a traffic light controlled crossroad. The light turns green and there is no filter light. Do you have to wait in the centre point of turn for oncoming traffic?

A

Yes, green with no filter light pointing right means you must take care of the traffic coming opposite ahead of you as the light is green for them. Wait in the centre point of turn for an opening.

27
Q

You want to turn right at a traffic light controlled crossroad. The light turns green and there is a filter light pointing right. Do you have to wait in the centre point of turn for oncoming traffic?

A

No, green with filter light pointing right means you don’t have to worry about oncoming traffic coming opposite ahead of you as the light is red for them. While turning right, observe that the opposite traffic is indeed slowing down for their red traffic light to be absolutely sure.
