Practical Deck 6 Flashcards
Your GPS tells you to turn right but you can’t see any side road or indication of a right side road. Do you indicate right?
No. Only indicate once you can visually identify the road you are trying to turn into.
What does ‘Tires on Tarmac’ mean?
It’s a saying for making sure you can see the bottom of the tires of the car Infront of you touching the road
When driving on a roundabout, what is the best way to stay in your lane?
(See Fig.64) Always look at the centre of your lane. This applies to staying in your lane in any circumstance.
When driving on a roundabout, where do you want to avoid looking at to stay in your lane?
Avoid looking at the central reservation kerb or the traffic next to your lane. Wherever you look, you will have a tendency to drive in that direction which is why you should look at the centre of your lane to stay in it.
You are approaching a speedhump. What do you do?
Check centre mirror and slow down 1/2 car length away from speedhump. Build back speed once your front tires get over the hump.
You are about to slow down. What do you do before you do so?
Check centre mirror
When waiting behind a parked car to let a car opposite pass through on a narrow road. What distance should you keep from you and the car you are waiting behind?
1 car length
When you do an emergency stop, do you check the centre mirror?
No, in the test the examiner will check behind to make sure it is safe. Even in a real life situation, you don’t check the centre mirror as your priority should be not hitting the pedestrian.
How to perform an emergency stop and what do you do to prevent skidding?
- Keep the wheel straight
- Rivet your foot from the accelerator to the break as quickly as possible.
- Once the car has stopped, put gear into park and put hand break up.
. When your foot is off the accelerator, do not hammer the pedal by also lifting your foot in the air and then pushing the break with full force. So make sure you keep your heels on the floor when moving from right (accelerator) to left (Break) and not your knees by moving up from accelerator to down towards the left (break).
If your car skids when doing an emergency stop what do you do?
- Leave foot firmly on the break
. The anti lock break will come into affect so you may feel a vibration on the break peddle which is normal.
On the test, you perform the emergency stop and then the tester firmly says ‘‘I will not ask you to do that again!’’ is something wrong?
No, it’s protocol for them to say that so you don’t think they will ask you to do another emergency stop.
What does a hill start manoeuvre entail?
- Parking on the side of the kerb that is on a hill
- Normal start manoeuvre but leaving the hand break pulled up until you know it is safe to use the gas to go from parked position and not roll back.
How do you do a 3 Point Turn manoeuvre?
- Stop and check blind spots and mirrors
- Drive very slowly forward, indicate and steer quickly and lock to the right
- Stop carefully without touching the kerb
- Check blind spots and mirrors, indicate and reverse very slowly while steering quickly and lock to the left
- Stop carefully without touching the kerb behind
- Slowly drive forward, indicate and steer quickly and lock to the right
forward - right
backward - left
forward - right
How do you do a Pull Up On The Right and Reverse manoeuvre?
- Once chosen a good place to stop
- Use MSM routine to safely park on the right side of the road. Move to the right in time for there to be time for the car to travel forward a little and straighten up fairly close to the kerb.
- Reverse gear
- Check blind spots and mirrors
- Reverse very slowly 2 car lengths and keep checking blind spots and mirrors especially right side mirror to make sure you are still parallel to the kerb while doing this.
- Stop (usually the instructor will tell you when to stop)
- Starting from right to left, check blind spots and mirrors
- Indicate left
- Wait for any oncoming traffic and then when it is safe, drive back to the left lane.
Can you do a U turn on a mini roundabout?
No.
