Practical Deck 1 Flashcards
How do you do a start manoeuvre?
- Break
- Put gear in Drive
- Push down handbreak
- Check blind spots and mirrors
- Signal
- When clear, apply gas while steering off side of kerb and checking right blind spot
- Cancel Indication
How do you reverse park into a parking bay?
- Pick your bay
(See Fig.3) - From the direction that your car is facing, from the right white line of the bay, count 3 more white lines.
- Position your reference point (See Fig.9) with that 3rd white line.
- Hold break and pull control stick to ‘R’
- Lock wheel to the side of the bay where you want to park
- Look at blind spots and mirrors
- Slowly break at a continuously slow pace while keeping on looking around until on the left mirror, you see that the white line of the bay runs parallel to your door handles.
- Straighten the wheel so you start to break in a straight line.
- Keep reversing until on the right side window, you see the right line of the bay coming in line with your point of reference (see Fig.4)
- Once you get out of the car you should see the car is on the inside of the white line.
How can I know that I am not driving too close to the central reservation of the roundabout when I am driving in the inner lane?
on the right window, I should be able to see the bottom of the curb of the central reservation meeting the road
What does the term ‘lock’ mean in terms of steering?
Turn the wheel all the way round to the point where it no longer allows you to turn anymore. This should be 1 whole turn and a half.
What are the letters on the control stick and what do they mean?
P - Parking
R - Reverse
N - Neutral
D - Drive
How do you do a pulling up on the left manoeuvre?
- Check centre and left mirrors
- Indicate left
- Make sure the space is appropriate for parking
- Steer close to the kerb so that it is in line with your reference point (See Fig. 31). To also help, check left mirror to see how parallel and close you are to the kerb.
- Gently brake
- Cancel indication
- Feet sill on brake, put gear in Park and pull up handbreak
What are the indications of a road nearby?
. Arrow signs on the road
. Road signs
. Road Name signs
. Houses that are split apart
. Yellow road lines curving into a side road
How to stop at a T junction?
- 6 cars away from the giveaway lines
- check mirrors
- Indicate
- slowly brake by a mm
- stop when the give way line is under your right mirror
Picture the giveway lines in your head
(See Fig.6)
How to Parallel Park?
- Stop 1 metre away next to the car that you are going to park behind
- While checking blind spots and mirrors, slowly reverse until the headlights/rearlights of the car aligns with the centre of your left side window then stop.
- While checking blind spots and mirrors, before reversing, do 1 full turn left on the steering wheel, slowly reverse until on your left/little left mirror, you see the corner of the back of your car meeting the curb and all of the road that you see is in the shape of a triangle.
- While checking blind spots and mirrors, before reversing, lock the wheel to the right, slowly reverse until on the little left side mirror, you see that the car is parallel with the curb then stop.
- While checking blind spots and mirrors, before reversing, do 1 full turn left on the steering wheel, slowly reverse 2 car lengths.
note when you are not being tested: You reverse your car until you are in the middle of the back and front car. Ideally you want to see the bottom of the front car’s wheel touching the road but under some parking situations that wont be possible.
In short:
. ×1 Left
. Lock Right
. ×1 Left
When I am asked to park somewhere safe, should I park on a raised or dropped kerb?
Raised Kerb
Picture a raised Kerb
(See Fig.7)
Picture a dropped Kerb
(See Fig.8)
If I am parked in front of a car and I cannot see the bottom of the car wheels touching the road, how do I turn my steering wheel to safely move out?
Before moving, I lock my wheel to the right.
How do you forward park into a parking bay?
- First align the right line of the parking bay you want to park in with the centre of your window when you lean slightly forward.
- Lock your wheel to the side that the parking bay is in
- Slowly go forward and on the little left mirror, you should see the white line intersecting with your door handle which indicates you should fit in the bay. keep going until on the little left and little right mirrors, you should see the white lines on both sides are becoming parallel with your door handles.
- Straighten up your wheel and go forward until the horizontal white line is under your right mirror. Then stop.
