Two powers of the criminal court
P- Sending them to prison.
E-If someone has committed a serious crime such as drug dealing then they can receive a custodial sentence.
E- The Sheriff Court can sentence someone to up to five years in prison however if they feel this is not enough they can refer the case to the High Court which has unlimited sentencing powers.
P- Community Payback Order.
E-This requires the offender to do a certain number of unpaid work to benefit their community.
E- If someone was found guilty of vandalism then the Justice of the Peace Court could issue them with a Community Payback Order so that they could clean it up and repair the damage they have caused.
