How the police have been effective in tackling crime

A

P- Pop up “Bob” deployments in Fife.
E-This is a cardboard cut out of a police officer with a speed gun which is used along with speed camera vans and officers checking speed with a handheld camera to encourage speeding drivers to slow down.
E- This is effective as the police cannot deploy officers and speed camera vans to lots of locations.

P- Using their power of stop and search.
E-This discourages young people from carrying knives as they can get a sentence of five years if caught carrying a knife.
E-Stop and search has been effective as crimes of handling an offensive weapon have dropped dramatically in Scotland, falling by almost 64% from 2007/08 to 2016/17.

How the police have been ineffective in tackling crime

A

P- The number of people killed or injured in roads in Fife is increasing.
E- Operation Paramount is to improve road safety in Fife by the police carrying out awareness campaigns and intelligence led enforcement activity.
E-In 2017 there was 5 fatal and 82 serious injuries on Fife roads and in 2018 this had increased to 10 fatal and 97 serious injuries.

P- The knife epidemic in London.
E- Police have the power to stop and search people if they suspect they are carrying dangerous weapons such as knives in order to prevent crime from taking place.
E-40 knife offences a day were reported to the police and a person was knifed to death on average every four days in London in 2017 and 2018.
