Explain in detail 2ways the courts have been effective in tackling crime in Scotland and the UK
P- They sentence dangerous people to prison
E- This means the public is will be safe as the criminal cannot harm the public if they are behind bars and the victim will not have to worry
E- Rapists and murderers are given lengthy prison sentences so they have sufficient time to be rehabilitated in prison before they are released and should therefore not be a threat to society
P- Issuing appropriate prison sentences
E- Those that commit more serious crimes will receive lengthier sentences than those who commit more minor crimes
E- The high court will impose a life sentence on someone who has been found guilty of murder
Explain in detail two reasons why some people claim prison works
P- It keeps the public safe
E- One of the aims of prison is to protect the public from those that pose a risk to society
E- The public wouldnt be safe if people who had murdered and raped were still allowed to roam the street without being sent to prison for a period of time in order to rehabilitate them
P- It deters people from commiting crime
E- Most people in the country would not like to be sent to prison as a punishment therefore it stops people from committing crimes
E- If someone was to be sent to prison they wouldnt be able to do whatever they wanted, wouldnt see their family much and could make it difficult to get a job when they are released from prison
