Posterior Axio-appendicular Muscles Flashcards
Name the superficial posterior axio-appendicular ( extrinsic shoulder) muscles
Trapezius and lattisimus Dori
Name the posterior axio-appendicular (extrinsic) muscles
Trapezius
Lattisimus Dori
Levator scapulae
Rhomboid minor and major
Name the deep posterior axio-appendicular (extrinsic shoulder) muscles
Levator scapulae
Rhomboid minor and major
Proximal and distal attachments of the trapezius
P: Nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, Nuchal ligament, spinous process if thoracic vertebrae (c7-c12)
D: lateral 3rd if clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Innervation of trapezius
Spinal accessory nerve
Action of trapezius
Descending part elevates;
Ascending part depresses;
Middle part retracts scapula
Descending and ascending parts act together to upwardly rotate scapula
Proximal and distal attachments of latissimus Dorsi
P: inferior thoracic spinous processes, thoraco lumbar fascia, iliac crest & Inferior ribs
D: intertubular sulcus of humerus
Innervation of latissimus Dorsi
Thoracodorsal nerve
Action of latissimus Dorsi
Extends, adducts and medically rotates humerus
Also raises body to trunk when climbing
Prox and distal attachments of levator scapulae
P: transverse processes of C1-C4 vertebrae
D: superior and to medial border of scapula spine
Innervation of levator scapulae
Dorsal scapular nerve and cervical nerves
Action of levator scapulae
Elevates scapula and rotates it’s glenoid cavity inferiorly by rotating scapula -downward rotation of scapula
Prox and distal attachments of rhomboid minor and major
P: Minor- Nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7 and T1
Major- spinous processes of T2-T5
D: Medial border of scapula
Innervation of rhomboids
Dorsal scapular nerve
Actions of rhomboids
Retract scapula
Fixes scapula to the thoracic wall
