Cutaneous And Superficial Muscles Of Neck Flashcards
Superior and inferior attachments of the platysma
S: border of mandible, skin and subcutaneous tissues of face
I: fascia covering pectorals major and deltoid muscles
Name the superficial muscles of the neck (3)
Playsma, sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
Innervation of the platysma ( superficial neck muscle)
Cervicle branch of facial nerve (CN VII)
Main action of platysma
Drowns corners of mouth down and widens
Draws muscles of the neck superiorly
Superior and inferior attachments of the sternocleidomastoid
S: lateral surface of mastoid process and Nuchal line
I: sternal head- anterior surface of manubrium of sternum
Clavicle head - superior surface of medial 3rd of clavicle
Innervation of SCM
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI motor); C2 and C3 nerves ( pain and proprioception)
Action of sternocleidomastoid unilateral and bilaterally
Unilaterally- tilts head to same side and rotates so face is towards opposite side
Bilaterally- extends the neck at Atlanto-occipital joint. Flexes cervical vertebrae or extends superiors cervical vertebrae
May also elevate the manubrium and medial ends of clavicles -assisting in pump handle action of deep respiration
Superior and inferior attachments of trapezius
S: medial 3rd of superior Nuchal line, occipital protuberance, Nuchal ligament, spinous process of C7-T12 vertebrae
I: lateral 3rd of clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Innervation of trapezius
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI, motor); C2 and C3 nerves ( pain and proprioception)
Action of trapezius for descending transverse and ascending fibers.
Descending- elevates scapula, shoulders against gravity
Transverse - retracts scapulae
Ascending- depress scapula and shoulders
Unilaterally - rotate spinous process of scapulae superiorly and lateral flexion of neck to same side.
Bilatrally- extension if neck
