Polymers of Life 7: Pharmacophores Flashcards

1
Q

Definition of lead compound

A
  • A chemical compound that has pharmacological or biological activity likely to be therapeutically useful but it structure may need modification

Q

Definition of pharmacophore ( in medicines )

A
  • Part of the molecule that binds to the active site

= give the medicine its particular pharmacological affect ( makes it medicinally active )

( different medicines can have the same pharmacophore but have been modified to either make it more affective or have less side-effects )

Q

How/ why different enantiomer affect the effectiveness of a pharmacophore

A
  • One isomer has the correct shape orientation and specificity for the enzyme active site
  • The receptor wanna kill is chiral say one item if it’s

Q

Give a brief summary of pharmacophores

A
  • can be modified by changing functional groups
  • Interact with receptor or active sites by following week interactions
  • fit into the receptor site with the correct size, shape, orientation and must form the correct weak interactions
    ( molecular recognition )

Q

Definition of asmolecular recognition

A

Idea that a drug molecule or a substrate fitting into an active site has to be specific with the correct orientation, correct shape, and correct bonds so that it can be catalysed by the active site
