What do aromatic compounds contain
Benzene ring = C6 H6 ( hexagon with circle or lines in it )
What does the circle in a benzene ring represent
Delocalised electrons
= similar to pi bonds in alkenes
What are the rules for naming benzene molecules with two or more substituents present
- Positions indicated with numbers giving the lowest possible numbers to the substituents
- Substituents should be listed in alphabetical order
When benzene rings are regarded as a substituent on another molecule ( same concept at alkyl groups ) what are they known as
Phenyl group = C6 H5
Definition of aliphatic
Straight chain or branched compounds containing just hydrocarbons
Definition of alicyclic
Any kind of a cyclic compound eg. cyclopentane
Definition of aromatic
Contain a benzene ring in the molecule
Definition of skeletal formula
No carbon-hydrogen bonds should be shown ( C-H )
Definition of structural formula
Showing each carbon and attached groups
Eg. H3C-CH2-CH3
Definition of displayed formula
When draw out every single bond in the molecule including the hydrogens
