Developing Metals 4: Electrochemical Series Flashcards
What does the electrochemical series show
What is reactive and what’s not
Describe the standard electrode potentials for a more reactive METAL
Reactive metal = -ve standard electrode potential
Describe the standard electrode potentials for a more reactive NON -METAL
Reactive non-metal = +ve standard electrode potential
What does the anti-clockwise rule predict
Whether a reaction is likely to happen
How does the anticlockwise roll sure you whether a reaction is likely to happen or not
Cell potential = E bottom - E top = +ve = reaction go to completion
What factors would lead to the value of the E cell being wrong and not as expected
- conditions not standard ( ie conc not 1moldm-3 and temp not 298k )
- rate of reaction to slow
- reaction has a high activation energy
What are the 7 steps that are required to determine the properties of half cells in a question
- refer to top ( more -ve E ) and bottom ( more +ve E ) equations
- Direction ( loose ( top ) or gain ( bottom) electrons )
- -ve( top ) or +ve ( bottom) electrode
- Write half equation ( now single arrow not double )
- Oxidation ( top= OIL ) or Reduction ( bottom = RIG )
- Reducing agent ( top ) or Oxidising agent ( bottom )
- Overall equation ( join to half equations = cancel our electrons )
- Calculate E cell = E bottom - E top
Be able to carry the 7 setups for any 2 half cell equation given along side there E values
