話法転換は一種の英作文 ・時制の一致に注意する ・代名詞や副詞の変化について知っておく ・文脈を良く考えてする ・それ自体、一種の英作文の練習のつもりでやってみる
彼女は、彼が以前はかなり金持ちだったと思っている
She thinks that he used to be quite rich.
彼はきっと君のせいだったと言うだろう
He will probably say that it was your fault.
主節の動詞の時制が未来の時も時制の一致は考えなくてよい
彼は、展覧会は、先週終わったと言った
He said that the exhibition had finished the previous week.
彼は会議を金曜日まで延期しようと提案した
He proposed that we postpone the meeting until Friday.
Proposeの場合、postponeは原形
彼は、私が犬を飼っていれば、人生がもっと楽しいだろうにと言った
He said that if I kept a dog I would probably enjoy life more.
仮定法は、時制の一致はさせず、そのまま使う。
直接話法では、
He said to me, “If you kept a dog, you would probably enjoy life more”となる
彼女は、自分には、何ができるのかを彼に尋ねた
She asked him what she could do.
私の医者は、私に、帰りたい時にはいつでもかえっていいと言った
My doctor told me that I could go home anytime I wanted to.
私は彼になるべく早く返事を出してくれるように頼んだ
I asked him to reply as soon as possible.
その医者は、彼女に怖いのかと尋ねた
The doctor asked her if she was frightened.
彼がありがとうと言ってくれることはめったにない
He hardly ever says thank you.
その警官は前の日にそこで容疑者を見かけたと言った
The police officer said that he had seen the suspect here the day before.
その薬剤師は彼に、錠剤と顆粒とどちらがいいかと尋ねた
The druggist asked him which he preferred, pills or granules.
彼女は、その音楽はなんてすてきなのでしょうと言った
She exclaimed how wonderful that music was.
彼は私に、注意しないと氷の上で滑って転ぶよと言った
He told me that if I didn’t take care I would slip on the ice.
