What is CURB-65 score used for?
A
Assessing the severity of a pneumonia case

Why is it useful?
A
Identification of mild disease + low risk of complications enables patients to be treated at home, thus reducing inappropriate hospitalisation

What are the criteria of the CURB-65 score?
A
Confusion - AMTS <8 Urea - >7mmol/L RR - >30/min BP - systolic <90mmHg or diastolic <60mmHg 65+ (age)

How does the score affect treatment?
A
Each criterion scores 1 point if present
Bracket 1 - score of 0-1 = home treatment with oral antibiotics
Bracket 2 - score of 2 = consideration of short-stay hospital-supervised treatment
Bracket 3 - score of ≥3 = admission as severe pneumonia for management in hospital
Bracket 3B - score of 4 or 5 = consider ICU admission
