Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) Flashcards
1
Q
What can cause DIC?
A
Infections
Malignancies
2
Q
Which infections/infective organisms can cause DIC?
A
Meningococcal septicaemia
Escherichia coli
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Malaria
3
Q
Which malignancies tend to cause DIC?
A
Lung cancer
Pancreatic cancer
4
Q
Pathophysiology of DIC?
A
- Diffuse endothelial damage (I’m guessing from inflammation) leads to widespread tissue factor expression
- This activates intravascular coagulation and uses up platelets, factors V/VIII, and fibrinogen
- The patient then enters a haemorrhagic state
5
Q
Blood test results in DIC?
A
Platelets fall (used up) Hb falls (blood loss) Fibrinogen falls (used up)
6
Q
How do INR and APTT change in DIC and why?
A
INR and APTT both increase
- both depend on factor V and fibrinogen
7
Q
Treatment for DIC?
A
Platelets and/or fresh-frozen plasma
