Clostridium Difficile Infection Flashcards
Why is barrier nursing in a side room indicated in C. diff infection but not an appropriate immediate step?
Prevents spread of the organism
- inappropriate as doesn’t treat the patient
Co-amoxiclav, clarithromycin, IV/oral vancomycin; which one do you use and why?
Oral vancomycin - vancomycin is useful in treating C.diff but IV vancomycin cannot cross bowel wall so oral is necessary
Co-amoxiclav isn’t used to treat C.diff and can cause it
Clarithromycin isn’t used to treat C.diff
How does omeprazole affect risk of C.diff infection and why?
Increases risk by reducing acidity of the bowel contents, prolonging C.diff survival
What other drug can be used to treat C.diff if patient is allergic/intolerant to oral vancomycin?
Oral metronidazole
