Cauda Equina Syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
What are signs of cauda equina syndrome?
A
Saddle anaesthesia Bladder distension + urinary retention Anal tone reduction Reduced/absent ankle reflexes Down-going plantars
2
Q
Why is saddle anaesthesia present in CES?
A
Compression of sensory fibres leaving spine at S3-S5
3
Q
Why is bladder distention/urinary retention present in CES?
A
Motor paralysis of detrusor muscle
Sensory loss leads to urinary retention
4
Q
Why are anal tone/ankle reflexes reduced/absent in CES?
A
Lower motor neurone nature of the weakness reduces anal tone and ankle reflexes
5
Q
Which conditions are planters up-going and down-going?
A
Up-going
- compression higher up the spine than lumbar/sacral spine
- CSE signs would be absent
Down-going
- CSE
