Foul smell/ Pus- empyema Milky-Chylothorax Blood stained- malignancy Bloody- Haemothorax/trauma Food particles- oesophageal rupture

Biochemistry results
A
-Protein level shows whether it is a transudate or exudate
-Glucose levels lower than 3.3mMol can indicate

Blood gas analysis
A
If Ph is <7.2 chest drain needs to be inserted

Microbiology
A
Will show
- malignant cells
- lymphocytes
- Eosonophils

Pleural biopsy equipment and where is the needle inserted
A
Abram’s needle if blind
Try-Cut needle if CT guided
inserted just above the rib to avoid the neurovascular bundle

How many biopsies and where are they sent
A
At least 4:
- 3 to histology
- 1 to microbiology if Tb suspected
