What is a background render?
This is an option in preferences that allows you to have Final Cut Pro perform render operations whenever your system is idle. Using the “start after” command within the preferences you can choose the amount of time your system is idle, in seconds, before Final Cut Pro begins background rendering.
Define render.
To process video and audio with any effects or transitions and store the result on disk as a render file. Render files are stored with your final cut pro event in project files. When you publish or export a project it is similarly rendered to create the output files.
What is the keyboard shortcut to play a project or clip from the beginning?
Shift control I or use the drop-downs from the view menu.
Can you use shortcut keys in full screen viewing?
Yes
What do the J, K and L keys do when playing back a clip?
The J key plays in reverse from where the playhead or skimmer is
The K key pauses
The L key plays forward from where the skimmer or playhead is
What key combination can you use to playback clips one frame at a time?
While holding down the letter K, use the J to review the clip one frame at a time in reverse or use the L to view the clip one frame at a time going forward.
What is the Event Viewer and how do you open and close it?
The event viewer shows clips from the browser next to the main viewer so you can preview two clips at once. You toggle it on and off with Control>Command>3.
What key do you use to play a clip in a loop?

How do you turn skimming on and off?
View>Skimming

View>Clip Skimming or option-command-S
How do you show Viewers on a separate display if you have a second display connected?
Windows>Show Viewers on Second Display. All viewer features including onscreen controls are now available on the second display.
How do you show your Libraries List and Browser on a second display?
Window>Show Events on Second Display
Is FireWire or DVP supported in FCP X?
No
What steps do you take to playback FCP X video through and external monitor or HDMI?
FCP preferences>Playback>choose either the external monitor or HDMI.
Window>A/V Output for both A/V and HDMI
Where do you set visual quality and playback performance?
Upper right hand corner of the viewer.
Better Quality: full res, may decrease playback performance for high quality large frame size video
Better Performance: decreased res but maintains playback performance even for very large media files.
