What is symbolic play development?
When a child starts to use objects to represent other objects.
What is exploratory play?
0-2 years.
Involves children using all of their senses to explore a range of everyday objects.
What is relational play?
0-2 years.
When a child uses two or more items to interact together e.g. a bowl and a spoon.
What is self pretend play?
0-2 years.
When a child performs one pretend action at a time on themselves e.g. pretending to eat.
Tend to use realistic toys e.g. a plastic spoon.
What is simple pretend play?
3-4 years.
A child performs simple pretend actions on toys or people.
What is sequenced pretend play?
4-5 years.
When a child learns to apply a logical sequence to their pretending.
E.g. if they want to give their doll a bath - takes off clothes first.
What is social play development?
Happens when a child is playing with an adult or other children.
Helps children to develop social skills.
E.g. communication, cooperation, problem-solving and perspective taking.
What is solitary play?
0-2 years.
Child plays alone.
What is the onlooker stage in regards to play?
2 years.
A child observes and watches peers playing without participating.
Learn by observing their surroundings and making mental observations.
What is parallel play?
2+ years.
When a two or more children are playing side by side but are not interacting.
What is associative play?
3-4 years.
A child plays side by side.
Sometimes engages but doesn’t coordinate efforts.
What is cooperative play?
4-5 years.
The child plays with others whilst interacting with them.
Interested in both others and the activity.
What is the games and rules stage of play?
5-6 years.
Rules imposed in a game.
Requires self-regulation - children need to be able to curb their own egotistical personal needs.
