Diphthong + example
A sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable, in which the sound begins as one vowel and moves towards another e.g. coin
Monophthong + example
A vowel that has a single perceived auditory quality e.g. cough
Homophone + example
Words that look different but sound the same e.g. new and knew
Homograph + example
Words that sound the same but have different meanings e.g. sea and see
Phonetics
The study and classification of speech sounds.
Phoneme + example
The smallest unit of speech that conveys a contrast in meaning e.g. p in tap
Allophone
Used to describe when a phoneme sounds slightly different depending on how it is used in a word e.g. hit + tip
Grapheme
The smallest unit in a written language.
Digraph
A grapheme that consists of two letters e.g. choose/ch/oo
Trigraph
A grapheme that consists of three letters e.g. match/tch
Phonology
Rules governing the sound system of a language
Expressive Language
The use of words, sentences, gestures and writing to convey meaning and messages to others.
Receptive Language
The ability to understand and comprehend spoken language that you hear or read.
