Plate margins Flashcards

1
Q

What happens at destructive margins when oceanic meets continental plate

A

Oceanic plate is denser so slides beneath continental into mantle and melts.

Q

What vis formed at destructive margins when oceanic meets continental plate

A

Form deep ocean trenches where plate starts to sink. Fold mountains form due to folding of continental plate. Friction causes earthquakes in area called benioff zone. Eruptions also happen as magma bubbles up

Q

What happens at a destructive plate boundary where oceanic plate meets oceanic plate

A

The denser oceanic is subducted beneath the other

Q

What is formed at a destructive plate boundary where oceanic plate meets oceanic plate

Ocean trenches, underwater volcanoes (due to subducted plate melting and rising up) Island arcs

Q

how are island arcs formed

A

Island arcs (growing volcanoes rise above sea levels to form an island volcano found in curved lines)

Q

What happens at a destructive plate margin with two continental plates

A

collision margin occurs as both have same density, neither plate is subducted instead they collide and crumple up to form fold mountains

Q

What happens at a constructive plate margins (divergent boundaries)

9
Q

How do mid ocean ridges form

A

new ocean floor is created as the Earth’s tectonic plates spread apart. As the plates separate, molten rock rises to the seafloor, producing enormous volcanic eruptions of basalt which harden and form ridge

Q

How do transform faults form

A

two plates slide past each other forming major break called a fault, on large scale is transform fault

Q

Where do rift valleys form and what boundary

A

Constructive plate margins, plates move apart crust stretches and breaks into sets of parallel cracks (faults) the land between faults then collapses forming steep sided rift valley

Q

How do hotspot volcanos form

A

heat rises as hot plumes of magma,
High heat and low pressure at base of lithosphere melts the rock, magma rises upwards through cracks and erupts to form active volcanos on earths surface, when plate moves over a hotspot, volcano carried away and new ones form

Q

What are intraplate earthquakes

A

earthquakes that occur in the middle of plate, sometimes associated with pre-existing weaknesses that become reactivated
