plasticity and lateralization Flashcards
what is neural plasticity?
the ability of neurons to change in structure and function over time
neural plasticity is demonstrated by various effects relating to?
the environment and experience
when does greater plasticity occur? why?
earlier on in life because children have more synapses then adults
what happens during pruning?
unused synapses deteriorate when not utilized
what is neurogenesis?
we can create brand new neurons that have various modulators (drugs, stress, exercise)
what is laterialization?
the tendency for some cognitive functions to be localized to one hemisphere
what is the function of the corpus callosum?
where the two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex can communicate
what is lateralized in the left hemisphere?
language, logic, positive emotion
what is lateralized in the right hemisphere?
spatial processing, melody perception, imagery, negative emotion
