Plant Nutrition - Parts Of The Leaf Flashcards
Upper Epidermis :
Protection
No chloroplasts
Absorbs harmful light but allows light for photosynthesis to pass through
Palisade Cell:
Tightly packed, elongated cells
Lots of chloroplasts
Higher rates of photosynthesis
Waxy cuticle:
Waterproof
Reduces water loss
Reduces infection by fungi and bacteria
Spongy Cells :
Loosely packed with air spaces between cells
Some chloroplast
Some photosynthesis
Air Spaces :
Between spongy cells
Provide air channels through leaf allowing gas exchange
Xylem :
Rigid vessel in lignin
Carries water and minerals to from the roots to the stem and the leaves
Phloem :
Vessels of living cells
Sieve tube cells form vessels
Carry dissolved sugar around plants to places where the glucose is used and stored as starch
Guard Cells :
Guard cells change in shape depending on the amount of water inside
Controls opening and closing of stomata (pores on the underside of leaves)
Stomata :
Space between the guard cells
Controls gas exchange (movement oxygen of carbon dioxide) and water loss form leaf
