Plant adaptations Flashcards
Why do adaptations help plants?
They allow them to survive in extreme conditions
Where might plants need adaptation?
- deserts
- hot or dry conditions
- sand dunes
- windy areas
What do plants in a rain forest have to be adapted to?
wet conditions and low light intensity
Name 3 adaptations of plants in a rainforest.
- large leaves to take in as much light as possible
- stems and leaves that climb up trees to obtain more light with the roots in the ground
- leaves with ‘drip tips’ so water runs off them
Why do plants have to adapt to waterlogged conditions?
-waterlogged soils have no air spaces so the root cells have difficulty obtaining oxygen for respiration
Name 2 adaptations of waterlogged conditions.
- spongy tissue in the roots that stores oxygen
- fine surface roots that take in oxygen at the water surface
Name and explain 5 adaptations of dry conditions.
-less stomata on underside of leaf
reduces amount of water lost through transpiration
-rolled up leaves
enables stomata to be on inside, reducing water loss
-spine shaped leaves
reduces surface area of the leaf
-waxy cuticle on outside of plant
stops water vapour escaping through epidermis
-widespread root system
deep and spread out to collect as much water as possible from the ground
