Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O ——> C6H12O6 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water -> oxygen + glucose
(chlorophyll and light energy needed)
What is needed (as well as the products) for photosynthesis?
chlorophyll and light energy
What is photosynthesis used to make?
food for the plant, glucose
What is chlorophyll?
a green substance found in chloroplasts which absorbs sunlight
What energy transfer happens during photosynthesis?
light energy to chemical energy in the sugars
What is material made from the products of photosynthesis called?
biomass
Where does photosynthesis occur?
chloroplasts
What 2 things is glucose used for in plants?
growth, making substances and other molecules
respiration for energy
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
endothermic (products have more energy than reactants)
What happens to glucose after it is made?
it is linked together to form starch
starch is stored in the chloroplasts until photosynthesis stops at night time
it is then broken down into sucrose and transported around the plant
Why do plants store glucose as starch?
to stop the cell filling with water
glucose is soluble and dissolves in water
starch is insoluble
