Malnutrition and obesity Flashcards
malnutrition
when a person eats too much or too little or a nutrient
deficiency diseases
caused by too little of some nutrients
obesity
too much body fat
caused by too much energy in the diet and not enough exercise
measuring obesity
BMI or waist:hip ratio
waist:hip ratio
waist measurement/hip measurement
people with a high ratio are more at risk of some diseases than those with a lower ratio
BMI
weight (kg)/height (m) squared
a BMI over 30 in adults is said to be obese
obesity is linked to health problems such as type 2 diabetes
A scientific study showed that for a 10g increase in wholegrain fibre that a person ate each day, there was a 10% decrease in their risk of developing bowel cancer
The scientists concluded that people should eat lots of wholegrain food every day to help them stay healthy.
Do the results of this study support this conclusion?
Give a reason for your answer [2]
The results do support this conclusion, because the more fibre the person eats the lower their risk of getting bowel cancer
A study of over 43000 american adult men showed that overweight men who were physically fit had the same risk of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes as men who were not overweight, but that unfit overweight men had a much higher risk of these diseases
A simple conclusion of this study is that being fit is important for health as well as not being overweight.
Evaluate this conclusion [3]
the study is a very large study and so the results are valid
the study is only of american men, so the conclusion may not apply to other groups of people
the conclusion does not distinguish between fit and unfit men who are not overweight, and these two groups may have differences in their risk factors for health that also cause some of the differences between fit and unfit overweight people
A 45 year old woman is 160 cm high and weighs 80 kg.
Calculate her BMI and state whether or not she is obese. [1]
she has a BMI of 31 and is obese
