Placebo Flashcards
What is the goal of using a placebo?
To please your athletes
What does it mean to use a placebo in patient care?
It means that because the patient has faith in you and believes in you, they heal faster and are more motivated to get better
What is an ethical issue when it comes to placebos in medicine?
Being deceptive to the patients. you need to make sure you aren’t being deceptive because otherwise, you could do more harm than good.
What is the placebo effect?
The caregiver’s belief in the treatment and his/her ability to provide effective care
What is a response to the placebo effect?
The patients faith in the caregiver’s words and actions change based on the placebo
What is the rationale of the placebo effect?
the lessening of fear, stress, and anxiety in a patient
Does everyone respond to the placebo effect?
no, there are some responders and non-responders
what are the two theories surrounding the placebo effect?
- Expectancy theory
- Conditioning theory
what is the expectancy theory?
The doctor gives contextual cues and this may lead to a change in the patient’s attitude and behaviors
what is the reward triggered by the expectancy theory?
there is a physiological response of the body, which could result in something like hormone secretion
What is the expectancy theory based on?
personal experiences; this is more explicit or intentional compared to the conditional theory
what is the conditioning theory based on?
associative learning
what is implied by “associative learning” when talking about the conditioning theory?
an exposure to treatment/ATCs leads to association of getting better
Does conditioning theory involve cognition (conscious awareness)?
no
