Pitt As War Minister Flashcards
What were the strengths of Pitt as a war minister?
. Made use of Britains most powerful resources, her navy and economy and moved away from her weaker areas such as her army.
. The British navy was both numerically and strategically better than Frances and because of this Britain was able to maintain a strong economic blockade on France which helped to diminish her economy.
. Also the navy was successful in eliminating Frances and her allies navy’s at a series of battles e.g. Trafalgar and Camperdown.
. Britain was able to subsidise her allies in an attempt to keep them in the war.
What were the weakness’s of Pitt as a war minister?
. Despite Britains naval success’s she was unable to have a big impact on Frances land armies and these armies were successful in taking Austria and Prussia out of the war.
. The subsidies that Britain gave her allies was still not enough to keep them in the war and they were eventually defeated by France.
How did Pitt use Britains Army?
. Instead of deploying the army to Europe Pitt used the army in conjunction with the navy to claim French oversea colonies
. This move weakened the French economy while at the same time increasing Britains economy and wealth.
