Catholic Emancipation Flashcards
What was catholic emancipation?
. Passed in 1829 it allowed Catholics ( who made up over 80% of the population in Ireland ) the right to stand as Mp’s in Westminster after their own parliament was abolished in 1800.
What effect did Catholic emancipation have?
. It became highly unpopular with the tory party and is a leading factor to why Peel resigned his parliamentary seat for Oxford university in response to widespread opposition there.
. The power of the catholic association was lowered by changing the qualification to vote for Irish county MPs from £2 to £10. This meant that less people overall voted.
Was Catholic emancipation liberal?
. Yes as it gave the Irish the freedom to speak for themselves in parliament as they were given permission to stand as MPs in parliament.
