How was Canning different from Castlereagh?
. While Castlereagh tried his best to maintain good relations with all the monarchs of Europe, canning did not attempt to do this, he was much more liberal than Castlereagh.
What was and how did Canning deal with the 1820 Spanish Crisis?
. The Spanish Crisis was a result of a liberal revolution in Spain which had established a constitutional monarchy, the Holy Alliance led by Russia had promised to restore the Spanish monarchy.
. Canning did not want French influence in Spain and so argued against it with the support of the Austrians.
. Canning however had not maintained good relations with Austria’s prince Von Metternich and so lost Austrian support.
. Because of this Canning withdrew Wellington from the congress of Verona and was unable to prevent a French invasion of Spain in 1823
What event occurred in South America and why did Canning support it?
. Canning wished to ensure that France’s actions in South America did not put to an end to the independence of Spain’s former colonies. He also wanted to prevent French dominance and threatening the balance of power.
. Canning also supported the independent American states because of trade.
. 10% of British exports went to South America
. In defence of this Canning refused to co-operate with Spain and Portugal to regain their former colonies
How did Canning deal with the crisis in Portugal?
. Portugal like Spain had established a constitutional Monarchy and now feared intervention from the Holy Alliance.
. Canning sent a naval force and 5000 marines to Lisbon as a gesture of defiance to the Holy Alliance.
. The move was more influenced by Canning wanting to protect British commercial interests in the region.
What was the Greek Revolt and how did Canning deal with it?
. The Greek revolt originated in Greece in 1821 and was an attempt by Greek rebels to become independent from the Ottoman Empire who had treated Greeks with much brutality.
. Canning in 1827 reluctantly agreed to receive Russian support in support of Greek independence ( But only after attempting to get Austrian support in preventing Russian expansion via them supporting Greek Independence).
. After Cannings death Russian, British and French fleets defeated the Ottoman navy at Navarino and 3 years later a fully independent Greece was created.
