Q

Duties of OOW in regard to pilot?

A

Despite having a pilot on board, the officer on watch is responsible for the ship’s safety. They shall share navigation procedures, local conditions, and the ship’s characteristics with the pilot and closely monitor the ship’s position and movement.

Any steering order given by the pilot shall be monitored and verified by means of keeping a safe navigational watch - looking down the new bearing, consulting the chart and navigational equipment. OOW shall make sure helmsman is doing a correct job and steering gear is working correctly.

If the officer in charge doubts the pilot’s actions or intentions, they should clarify with the pilot and, if still unsure, inform the master immediately and take necessary actions.
