Checking compass Flashcards
1
Q
How often shall we check our compass?
A
Before departure and Once per watch
2
Q
How do we check our compass?
A
Transit bearing
Amplitude of the sun
Azimuth of a heavenly body
3
Q
How do we check our compass using a transit? (Gyro)
A
- Take an observed bearing of the transit bearing
- Find the true bearing on the chart
- Compare observed bearing to true bearing to find compass error
4
Q
How do we check our compass using a transit? (Magnetic compass)
A
- Take an observed bearing of the transit bearing
- Find the true bearing on the chart
- Note ships heading
- Do a TVMDC calculation to find deviation
- Compare deviation calculated to deviation card to find compass error
5
Q
How do we check our compass using Amplitude of the sun?
A
- Take an observed bearing of the sunrise/sunset half a diameter over the horizon
- Find declination in the Nautical almanac
- Find latitude from GPS
- Go to Norries and use appropriate table to find true bearing
- Compare observed bearing to true bearing to find compass error
6
Q
How do we check our compass using Azimuth of a heavenly body?
A
- Take bearing of heavenly body on the hour
- Find declination of heavenly body in Nautical almanac
- Get greenwich hour angle from nautical almanac
- Convert greenwich hour angle to local hour angle (add or subtract your longitude depending on east or west from London)
- Enter rapid sight reduction table with your latitude (from gps), declination and local hour angle which will give you a Zenith value
- Calculate true bearing from Zenith value
- Compare true bearing to observed bearing and get compass error
