What is MARPOL?
The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships
What’s a special area?
due to technical reasons relating to their
oceanographical-& ecological condition
And to their sea traffic.
When can you pump out oily water?
Oily water separator with an automatic shut off quick closing valve
15PPM
En route as far as practicable from land
When are you allowed to discharge oil?
Never, except for in immediate danger eg. sinking
What is SOPEP?
Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan
Oil record book?
Coded book
Logs all transfer and discharge of oil
Needs to be maintained onboard for 3 years for inspection
Each completed page signed by the master
What does the SOPEP plan do?
Gives guidance for the master and the officer in the event of an oil spill or where an oil spill is likely to occur.
Contains
*List of shore based contacts, *Standard incident report form,
*Flowcharts,
*Onboard procedures,
*SOPEP Kit content and quantity
List of shore contacts gets updated every quarter
When are you allowed to pump out sewage?
*more than 3 nautical miles from the nearest land if the sewage has been comminuted and disinfected using an approved system.
*more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land if the sewage is not comminuted or disinfected.
*The ship must be en route and proceeding at a speed of not less than 4 knots.
*No visible sign of discharge
*In emergencies

Straight of Bonifacio
On the chart there will be a box saying PSSA see chart note and certain vessels will not even be allowed in there
Each PSSA will be different and unique and therefore you will have to read the chart for each
