What is a HRU and how does it work?
Hydro-static release unit, works under pressure from 1.5m-4m. The water pressure push a diaphragm which releases a spring loaded knife that cuts the strong rope.
What is the weak link and what does it do?
It is the red plastic bit where you attach the painter to. It is strong enough to deploy the liferaft from it’s casing and will afterwards break from the force of buoyancy of the liferaft which will release the liferaft from the ship
How does an EPIRB work?
EPIRB when activated or in contact with saltwater will send a signal (406 mHz) containing position & HEX ID (Vessel information) to Cospas-Sarsat polar orbiting satellite system. The satellite will then send that information to the LES (Land Earth Station) which the EPIRB is registered to. The MRCC in question will then contact appropriate authorities/MRCC in the area affected. The SAR party can then home in on 121.5MHz to locate the casualty.
How does a SART work?
What is the general alarm?
Seven short (or more) blasts followed by one prolonged blast
What are the distress signals? (14)
- Gun or other explosive signal fired at intervals of about a minute;
- Continuous sounding with any fog-signalling apparatus
- Any SOS in morse code
- DSC
- R/T - Mayday
- November - Charlie
- Square flag with a ball above or below
- Flames on the vessel
- Red light from a flare
- Orange smoke

Lifebouys: In place , ships name & port of registry, light-smoke-line, manropes
Liferaft: Correctly fitted, HRU in date, weak link installed correctly, ID card existing and up to date, service interval
Immersion suits: Zips, retroreflective tape, condition of bag, suit corresponds with bag, check for rips & tears, whistle, expiration date for lights and batteries
Lifeboat: Lashings, equipment inside in place, run engine
