Q

What is the weak link and what does it do?

A

It is the red plastic bit where you attach the painter to. It is strong enough to deploy the liferaft from it’s casing and will afterwards break from the force of buoyancy of the liferaft which will release the liferaft from the ship

Q

How does an EPIRB work?

A

EPIRB when activated or in contact with saltwater will send a signal (406 mHz) containing position & HEX ID (Vessel information) to Cospas-Sarsat polar orbiting satellite system. The satellite will then send that information to the LES (Land Earth Station) which the EPIRB is registered to. The MRCC in question will then contact appropriate authorities/MRCC in the area affected. The SAR party can then home in on 121.5MHz to locate the casualty.
