What is the Anderson turn?
Single turn
Hard over towards the casualty until 250° from the original course, then straighten the rudder.
What is the Williamson turn?
- Turn the rudder hard towards the casualty.
- When the ship has turned 60° from its original course, turn the rudder hard to the opposite side.
- As the ship nears 20° short of the reciprocal original course, straighten the rudder.
What are the different MOBs?
Witnessed:
Immediate
Delayed
Unwitnessed:
Person-missing
Windward or leeward of casualty?
Windward
What would you as a OOW on watch do in event of MOB witnessed by the bridge?
Engage hand-steering and turn towards the casualty
Throw lifebouy with light & smoke
Inform the master
Raise the alarm saying where the MOB is and muster
Post lookouts with binoculars high up on the ship
Sound “Oscar” & hoist flag
MOB buttons on all bridge equipment
Commence turn depending on the factors present (Weather, own ship, viz, etc..)
Prepare R/T team with VHF radios
On master command - Send a distress call “MAYDAY”

What does the leg sizes of the SAR patterns depend on?
How visible the object/person being rescued is in the water (Sea state, characteristics)
