Piaget Theory Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of Piaget’s theory and the ages which these phases occur?
Sensorimotor stage - 0-2 years
Preoperational phase - 2-7 years
Concrete operational phase - 7-11 years
Formal operational - 11+
Describe what happens during Sensorimotor stage and what the goal is
Coordination of sensory experiences (seeing and hearing). Goal is Object permanence
Define Object Permanence
Understanding that objects continue to exist when when not in view, heard or untouched
Describe what happens during the preoperational phase and what the goal is
Development of language, memory and imagination. Egocentricity and intuitive stage. Goal is symbolic thought
Define Symbolic thought
The representation of reality through the use of abstract concepts. The ability to represent people, objects and events (even those which aren’t present) by using internal symbols or images
Describe Concrete operational phase and what the goal is
Logical methodical manipulation of symbols. Less egocentric and more aware of outside world and events. Goal is Operational thought
Define Operational thought
Mental actions that are reversible
Describe what happens during Formal operational stage and what the goal is
Use of symbols to relate abstract concepts, make hypotheses and grasp abstract concepts and relationships. Goal is abstract concepts and thoughts. (Hypo-deductive reasoning)
Define abstract concepts
A complex thought process where ideas are the focus rather than the tangible objects
Define Schema
A concept or framework that organises and interprets information
Define Assimilation
Interpreting new experiences in terms of our schemas
Define Accommodation
Adapting our current understandings (schemas) to incorporate new information
Define Classification
The action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics. The ability to use categorical information to solve problems
Define Conservation
Logical thinking that allows a person to determine that certain quantity will remain the same despite adjustments of the container, shape or apparent size (tall glass, short glass with liquid)
What is the Three Mountain Task?
A task invented by Piaget and Inhelder, in which children are asked to look at a model of a landscape marked by hills and tell how it looks from a perspective different to their own (assess visual perspective taking in children and Egocentrism)
