Bronfenbrenner Flashcards
What is Bronfenbrenner’s theory?
- Ecological model
- Inherent qualities of children and their environments. Interact to influence how they grow and develop
What is the importance of the Individual and Environment?
Human development occurs as a result of the individuals’ interactions with the environment. The individual sits at the center of the environment
(E.g. The manipulation of external environments such as providing healthcare advice and promoting good health practices, can positively influence an individual’s developmental outcomes)
What systems has Bronfenbrenner divided the environment into?
- Microsystems
- Mesosystem
- Exosystem
- Macrosystem
- Chronosystems
What is the Microsystem?
Immediate smallest environment
E.g. family, home, school, daycare, personal interactions with these groups
What is the Mesosystem?
Connections (interactions between microsystems)
linkages of microsystems between home, school, peer groups, family and community
What is the Exosystem?
Indirect environments (Links between people and places that may not directly relate to the individual, but have influence)
(e.g. Parents workplaces, extended workplaces, extended family, neighbourhoods)
What is Macrosystem?
Social cultural values
Largest most distance cultural values, patterns
Political and economic systems
What is Chronosystems?
Changes over time
Change and consistency in the environment, influence of behaviour within different settings.
(Change in family structure, employment status, addresses, wars, pandemics, economic cycles)
