What are the 4 stages of Attachment and what age does each stage occur
- Pre-attachment phase (Birth - 6 weeks)
- Attachment in the making (6 weeks - 6/8 months)
- Clear cut attachment (6/8 months - 18 months)
- Reciprocal relationship (18 months - 2 years onwards)
What are the 4 attachment styles?
- Secure
- Insecure - Avoidant
- Insecure - Resistant
- Insecure - Disorganised
Describe the attachment style of secure
Children who show some distress when their caregiver leaves but are able to compose themselves knowing that their caregiver will return. Feel protected by their caregivers, and they know they can depend on them to return
Describe the attachment style of Insecure - Avoidant
Unresponsive to parent. Avoidance or slow to seek contact
Describe the attachment style of insecure-resistant
Distressed by separations and cannot be comforted by caregiver and fearful of strangers
Describe the attachment style of insecure-disorganised
Overt displays of fear/anger contradictory behaviour seeking proximity and rejecting
What is both the mother and the infants response to the attachment style of secure?
Mother:
Loving sensitive reassuring and consistent
Infant:
Safe secure and can freely express emotions and approach care giver knowing they will respond in promptly.
