Erikson's Theory Flashcards
What are the 8 stages of human development Erikson has proposed and the ages each stage occurs at
- Trust VS Mistrust (Birth - 18 months)
- Autonomy VS shame and doubt (18 months - 3 years)
- Initiative VS Guilt (3-5 years)
- Industry VS inferiority (6-12 years)
- Identity VS role (identity) confusion (12-21 years)
- Intimacy VS isolation (21-35 years)
- Generativity VS self-absorption (35-65 years)
- Integrity VS despair (65+ years)
Describe what happens during Trust VS Mistrust
Ability to trust others to meet needs and beginning to self-trust (learn to trust that their caregivers will meet their basic needs, interactions provide reliability, care, and affection)
Describe what happens during Autonomy VS shame and doubt
Ability to act independently, develop self-control versus defiance. Develop sense of own abilities (focused on developing a greater sense of self-control)
Describe what happens during Initiative VS guilt
Initiate roles, follow rules, sense of purpose/achievement of defiance. Develop sense of own abilities (children assert themselves more frequently through directing play and other social interaction)
Describe what happens during Industry VS inferiority
Ability to make friends (work and play) achieve tasks versus withdrawal from school and friend’s judgement of performance helps and hinders. (child learns to be productive and to accept evaluation of his or her efforts or becomes discouraged and feels inferior or incompetent.)
Describe what happens during Identity VS role confusion
Developing understanding of self “who am I?” “What kind of adult will I become?” Personal beliefs versus confusion, indecisiveness and antisocial behaviour (conflicted with dozens of values and ideas of who they should be and what they should think)
Describe what happens during Intimacy VS isolation
Learning to know themselves. Ability to select a significant other, starting a family, ability to form intimate relationships versus inability to commit
Describe what happens during Generativity VS self-absorption
Develop career goals, ability to share all aspects of life with others (social and civic responsibilities) creativity and family responsibilities.
Describe what happens during Integrity VS despair
Time of reflection of life, adjusting to loss. Wisdom, satisfaction or feelings of regret (reflect back on the life they have lived and come away with either a sense of fulfilment from a life well lived or a sense of regret and despair over a life misspent)
What is Erikson’s Theory?
Theory that proposes 8 stages of human development. Each stage consists of a unique development that confronts individuals with a crisis that must be resolved
