PHYSICS - Motion Flashcards
What is Newton’s 1st law?
An object at rest or moving at a constant speed will continue to do so unless acted on by a force
What is Newton’s 2nd law?
resultant force = mass × acceleration
(F=ma)
What is Newton’s 3nd law?
When two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
What is the formula for weight?
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
(W = mg)
((g is 10 on earth))
What units are weight measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is the difference between a scalar and a vector quantity?
Scalar quantities only have a magnitude or size.
Vectors also have a direction
Which are scalar and which are vector?
Temperature
Mass
Weight
Velocity
Speed
Density
Temperature - Scalar
Mass - Scalar
Weight - Vector
Velocity - Vector
Speed - Scalar
Density - Scalar
What is the formula for speed?
Speed = Distance traveled/Time
(s=d/t)
e.g. to calculate a speed in m/s you divide the distance in meters by the seconds it took to travel
On a distance-time graph, what does a horizontal line mean?
The object is stationary
On a distance-time graph, what does a straight line mean?
Steady speed
On a distance-time graph, what does a curved line mean?
Acceleration/deceleration
On a velocity-time graph, what does a horizontal line mean?
Steady speed
On a velocity-time graph, what does a straight line mean?
Steady acceleration/deceleration
On a velocity-time graph, what does a curved line mean?
Changing acceleration/deceleration
What is the formula for acceleration?
Acceleration = Change in speed/time
(a = Δv/t)
