PHYSICS - Half life Flashcards
When does radioactive decay occur?
When nucleus emits a particle
What is half-life?
The time taken for the activity/substance/material/mass/nuclei/atoms to reduce by half
[Not radioactivity or radiation]
Look at first few pages (very very important)
its graph related
That is correct
But why did you have to be so vague ¬.¬
oh nah nvm
From that cube with dots on it, practical thingy, how to improve accuracy and reduce anomalies?
Use class results and idk if increasing number of dice (bigger sample size)
What are 2 uses of radiation?
Medical tracers
Radiotherapy
What 3 things of radiation will be suitable for certain uses of radiation?
- Ionising ability
- Penetrating power
- Half-life
Explain medical tracers
- Radioactive isotopes injected/ingested into body
- Absorbed by particular organ/tumour
- You can now observe radiation being given out to detect any abnormalities
- And also see if it’s functioning properly
What type of radiation would u use for medical tracers?
Gamma cuz lower ionisation and most radiating
What type of half-life should medical tracer have?
Low to limit dose of radiation , though long enough to measure
What does non-invasive mean?
- Not physically cutting body to see inside
- Observe body without getting inside
Explain radiotherapy
- Radiation used to treat cancer
- Depending on tumour and its location depends on type of radiotherapy
Explain external beam therapy
- Radiation aimed from outside the body, travelling into and thru body
- Targeted at tumour and rotates around body
- Rotates to prevent higher dose for the healthy tissues
- Half life of the radiation source would be high
- Last long time and prevent having a replacement
Explain brachytherapy
- Needles containing radiation inserted into tumour
- Radiation passes outside implant
- and into cancer + not rest of body
What typa radiation good for brachytherapy?
Beta
dunno it says “passes out of the needles and is absorbed by the tumour”
What should half-life be for radioisotope used for brachytherapy?
- Long enough to affect tumour
- But not affect body ig
