Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photolysis
Splitting of water by light
Give two ways to increase the rate of photosynthesis
Artificial light sources
Artificial sources of C02 (burning gas)
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants make food
Equation for photosynthesis
6CO2+6H2O+light +chlorophyll
—>C6H12O6
Role of chlorophyll
Trap sunlight energy
Location of chlorophyll
Chloroplasts
What does ATP stand for
Adenosine triphosphate
How is ATP formed from ADP
ADP uses energy released from electrons to join with a phosphate
Two sources of the co2 found in the atmosphere
Respiration
Combustion
Briefly describe pathway 1
Energised electron leaves chlorophyll and goes through a series of carriers. It loses energy as it goes and returns to the chlorophyll. The energy released forms ATP, which goes to the dark stage.
Briefly describe pathway 2
Two electrons are taking up by NADP+ and it becomes NADP-. Water is split by hydrolysis. Electrons produced go back to chlorophyll to replenish ones that left.
Protons join H+ pool
Oxygen used in plant or released to atmosphere.
NADPH is formed from H+ pool and goes to dark stage.
Briefly describe the dark stage
C02 reduced to carb by enzymes and products of the light stage. Energy provided by the ATP, H+ ions and electrons provided by NADPH.
ADP and NADP+ return to light stage.
Products or the light stage
ATP, NADPH and oxygen
Name of pathway 1
Cyclic phosphorylation
Name of pathway 2
Non-cyclic phosphorylation
