Photosynthesis Flashcards
what is photsynthesis
THE PRODUCTION OF CARBON COMPOUNDS IN CELLS USING LIGHT ENERGY
- photosyntehsis uses light energy to create chemical energy needed for life
formula for photosynthesis
C02 + H20 -> 02 + C6H12O6
carbon dioxide + water-> oxygen + glucose
why are leaves green
- chlorphyll in chlorplasts
- the visible spectrum of the electromagnetic (the middle is green, and light energy is needed to produced carbon compounds from carbon dioxide)
what is photosynthetic pigment
coloured biological compound that is present in chlorplatsa and photosynthetetic bacteria, and which capture light energy for photosynthesis
range of visible light
violent= shortest red= longest
main three regions of the visible light spectrum
- red
- green
- blue
what do substances do when struck by the wavelength
- absorb it
- reflect it
why is chlorophyll green
- absorbs the other colors of the spectrum and reflects the green light
first stage of photosynthesis
- light dependent reactions occur where chlorophyll absorbs light energy and converts that energy to ATP
how is oxygen produced in photosynthesis
- through the photolysis of water, where oxygen is released form the plant as a waste product
second stage of photosynthesis
- light indepednent reactions
- ## ATP and hydrogen are used to convert carbon dioxide and water into useful organic molecules
limiting factors of photosynthesis (draw graphs)
- light intensity
- temperature
- carbon dioxide concentration
- water concentration
action and absorption spectrum (draw it)
absorption spectrum of chlorophyll corresponds with the action spectrum of photosynthesis
measure the rate of photosynthesis
rate= change/time
changes to the earths atmosphere, oceans and rock desposition
ATMOSPHERE: - preearth had only 2% oxygen= no life - cyanobacteria were the first to produce photosynthesis - ozone layer formation through oxygen OCEANS: -oxygen sinks (oxidizes compounds)
ROCK DESPOSITION:
-banded iron formations in rocks due to insoluble iron oxides
