DNA and RNA Flashcards
what is a nucleotide
a molcule containing a phosphate group, attached to a pentose sugar and a base
- its the monomer of nucleic acids
- nitrogen containing organic substances that form the bases of the nucleic acids in DNA and RNA
what is DNA
deoxyribose nucleic acid
- code for life in eurkaryotes (all functions in a living organism)
- a double helix made of two antiparallel strands of nucleotides liked by hydrogen bonding between completmentary base pairs
pentose sugar in RNA and DNA
RNA- ribose sugar
DNA- deoxy ribose sugar
what are the purines
adenine and guanine
pyramidine
thymine and cytosine
bases in RNA
Adenine-Uracil
Guanine-Cytosine
what did watson crick and franklin do
WATSON AND CRICK= discovered the structure and existence of DNA and its double helix
Rosland Franklin= helped through using DNA crystallography
difference between DNA and RNA
DNA
- double helix (stranded)
- is a deoxyribose sugar
- thymine as a base
- found in nucleus primality
- just one type
RNA
- single stranded
- ribose sugar
- uracil as base
- in and outside of nucleus
- three types (tRNA, mRNA and rRNA)
bond that links nucleotides together
phosphodiester bond
bond that links base pairs together
hydrogen bond
direction of a strand
5’-3’ or 3’-5’
DNA’s strands are…
antiparallel
what DNA strands twist to form
a double helix
major groove
ON TOP in twist
MINO GROOVE
