Q

Draw a chain of the uses of glucose in a plant

A

Glucose –> building new C compounds including:
–> starch –> for storage
–> cellulose –> for cell wall
–> lipids –> for cell membranes
–> amino acids –> to make proteins such as enzymes e.g. chlorophyll

Glucose–> respiration –> energy for:
–> cell reactions
–> building new C compounds
–> active transport –> take in minerals –> moving substances against the concentration gradient
–> taking in nitrates –> that make amino acids –>to make proteins such as enzymes e.g. chlorophyll.

Q

What two factors does a greenhouse aim to control, why?

A
  • Light intensity - providing plants with a stable light source enables them to constantly carry out photosynthesis if there are no other limiting factors, meaning they grow all year round
  • Temperature - remaining at. constant temperature ensures that the plant’s enzymes are at their optimum temperature for reacting, they aren’t slowed down or become denatured. This means they can carry out photosynthesis.

Q

How does fertiliser help plants grow?

A

It provides them with the right nutrients and minerals that they would get from a natural environment

Q

Why are greenhouses made of glass?

A

Glass allowed the sun’s insolation to enter, but retains its heat energy giving plants enough warmth

Q

In some greenhouses they burn charcoal why?

A

To produce CO₂ which is required in photosynthesis. Making an environment abundant in CO₂ means that it doesn’t become a limiting factor that stops efficient growth in the greenhouse.

Q

Why are sprinklers used in greenhouses?

A

To imitate natural rain and moisten the soil, this makes the plant able to intake water for photosynthesis and make it realise that water is not scarce, encouraging the stomata to open and allow gas exchange to happen for photosynthesis.
