Organs in animals Flashcards
What is blood made of and describe their uses:
Red blood cells- a biconcave structure containing haemoglobin used to absorb oxygen from the lungs and transport them to the body’s cells.
White blood cells- part of the human defence system, helps defend internal body from pathogens by targeting them, killing them (eating them), using antibodies or antitoxins.
Plasma- what the white/red blood cells and the platelets are suspended in. Also contains waste substances such as urea and carbon dioxide and transports them to the organs where they can be excreted.
Platelets- helps the blood to coagulate and form scabs.
What are the three blood vessels and what do they do?
Arteries- carries blood away from the heart, either to the rest of the body or the lungs.
Veins- brings blood to the heart to be pumped.
Capillaries- blood vessels that take blood to specific parts of the body.
What is the heart’s purpose?
To pump blood around the body.
What are the four chamber of the heart called?
Left atrium
Left ventricle
Right atrium
Right ventricle
Which is at the bottom of the heart: ventricle or atrium?
Ventricle
What are the four blood vessels that the heart pumps blood through?
Vena cava (brings blood to the heart from the body)
Pulmonary vein- brings blood to the heart from the lungs)
Pulmonary artery- carries blood away from the heart to the lungs.
Aorta- carries blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.
