Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Water + carbon dioxide —> glucose + oxygen
Photosynthesis is an exothermic/endothermic reaction
Endothermic
What is a endothermic reaction
When energy is taken in from the surroundings
Definition of photosynthesis
The conversion of light energy into chemical potential energy in the form of ATP
How does plants obtain CO2
- from Air
- CO2 diffuses down the concentration gradient from the environment air
- through the stomata , into air spaces inside leaf
- then diffuses into mesophyll cells
How does plants obtain water?
- from soil
- water moves by osmosis down water potential gradient
- from spaces between soil into root hair cell
Which organelle does photosynthesis occur
Chloroplasts
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis
C6 H12 O6
Limiting factor -
A factor when in short supply that prevents photosynthesis occurring at its maximum rate
Name 4 limiting factors
- light
- carbon dioxide
- temperature
- number of chlorophyll
What happens to the enzymes when the temperature is to low
- become inactive at very low temperatures
What happens when the temperature is above the optimum temperature
- enzymes denature
- causes rate of photosynthesis to decrease to zero
What are the uses for glucose:
- respiration to transfer energy from glucose to other molecules
- convert into insoluble starch for storage (starch does not affect water potential )
- Convert into lipids for storage in seeds and tubers
- convert into amino acids : glucose combined nitrate ions produce amino acids.
chain of amino acids to make protein
